For Womentainment, Accused isn’t just another psychological drama with a new take on #MeToo. This is a narrative grenade rolled gently into a space that has long been dominated by one archetype: the powerful male doctor, the whispered allegations, the unraveling wife at home.

With Accused, Netflix flips the lens.

Well, to a point, anyway, as we do wind up with another trope: The lesbian predator. Whether the queer doctor in Accused is truly a predator is the question waiting to be answered. In many ways, this is reminiscent of Tár, starring Cate Blanchett. Only, instead of a conductor, this time the woman is a doctor. A gynecologist, no less.

Also, this plays out in the UK, but it’s an Indian Netflix production, and much is in Hindi (unless you choose a dubbed version, which I never recommend).

Directed by Anubhuti Kashyap and starring Konkona Sensharma and Pratibha Rannta, Accused centers on Dr. Geetika Sen, a celebrated surgeon accused of sexual misconduct. But here’s the tectonic shift: she is married to a woman.

And that changes everything.

When the “Accused” Isn’t a Man

Stories about sexual misconduct have a familiar silhouette. A powerful man. A younger woman. A wife in the shadows.

Accused disrupts that silhouette.

Geetika is not the usual suspect. She is a woman in power. A surgeon and gynecologist. A spouse in a same-sex marriage. A figure of authority in a profession built on trust and bodily autonomy. When allegations surface, the narrative doesn’t just question her innocence. It interrogates our assumptions.

Because when the accused is a woman, especially a lesbian woman, the cultural script glitches.

Society often frames women as default victims, not perpetrators. Queer women, in particular, are frequently desexualized or romanticized in media. Well, with the “lesbian predator” trope, which is thankfully a thing of the past.

For the most part, as here it becomes a theme yet again… but not in a bad way, per se.

Otherwise, we are now seen more as lovers, artists, or rebels. Rarely are we depicted as figures capable of crossing ethical lines in positions of institutional power.

That discomfort is the real psychological thriller here.

A Lesbian Marriage Under Scrutiny

The emotional core of the film lies not only in public judgment but in private fracture. Geetika’s marriage to Dr. Meera becomes a pressure chamber. Trust is no longer automatic. Loyalty is no longer pure. Love is forced to coexist with doubt.

And this matters.

Queer relationships in mainstream Indian cinema have often been framed as fragile blossoms fighting societal prejudice. The conflict typically comes from outside: family rejection, legal barriers, and cultural stigma.

In Accused, the conflict erupts from within. However, again, Accused also deals with those other issues. Not least, as the women are both from India, but are living freely in the UK now.

The film dares to portray a lesbian marriage not as symbolic activism, not as tragedy porn, but as a complex adult relationship navigating betrayal, ambiguity, and moral uncertainty. That normalization is powerful. It says: queer couples do not exist only to represent struggle. They exist to represent humanity in all its mess.

Power, Gender, and the Double Bind

A woman in power is already navigating a tightrope. A lesbian woman in power carries even more invisible weight.

If Geetika is innocent, is she being judged more harshly because she defies expectations? If she is guilty, does that complicate feminist narratives that center women primarily as victims?

The film does not rush toward clarity, and that restraint is strategic. As Kashyap has said, the story resists easy answers. It lingers in ambiguity, forcing audiences to confront their own biases.

And perhaps the most radical move is this: Accused does not sanitize its queer protagonist. It does not make her morally pure to earn audience sympathy. It allows her to be complicated.

That alone feels like progress.

Why The 2026 Netflix Accused Story Matters Now

In global conversations around #MeToo and workplace accountability, queer dynamics are often underexplored. Power does not disappear simply because both parties are women. Consent does not become uncomplicated because gender binaries blur.

And crucially, it does so without turning the queer relationship into spectacle. Again, this was also covered in Tár, but with the 2026 Netflix movie Accused, there is the added pressure of the accused woman being a queer person of color.

Dharma Productions has backed a story that feels quietly disruptive. Rather than building drama through sensational courtroom theatrics, the film appears to rely on emotional stillness, silence, and psychological tension.

The result is a rare thing: a queer-centered story that isn’t about coming out, isn’t about homophobia, isn’t about forbidden love. It’s about power. Trust. Reputation. And the terrifying space between truth and perception.

In a media landscape that often flattens queer women into symbols, Accused gives us something more unsettling and more honest.

Don’t Expect Too Much Affection from Accused (2026)

For queer women expecting to see the married couple being a married couple in a physical sense, there will be disappointment. On the one hand, I acknowledge that this isn’t the point of the story. On the other hand, you would never have seen a straight married couple interact with so little physical romance shown on screen.

So, make sure you set your expectations accordingly to avoid disappointment. A good follow-up movie could be I Can’t Think Straight. Just to see a wonderful love story play out in a similar setting and circumstances.

The new French LGBTQ movie Love Letters was directed by Alice Douard. The tender dramedy explores queer motherhood, legal recognition, and the quiet resilience of love.

It’s a heartfelt, humorous, and deeply human story that’s already drawing comparisons to Blue Is the Warmest Colour—but with more warmth, less voyeurism, and a whole lot more joy. Sounds about right, as the comparisons wouldn’t make much sense otherwise.

The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love is not just a movie with a very long title, it’s also an absolute LGBTQ classic. And now it’s finally on Netflix – probably due to it being Pride month.

It’s a pretty spot-on representation of what it was like to be gay in the mid-1990s. The movie is from 1995 and I personally remember watching it for the first time. And no, it doesn’t have a sad ending. And yes, everyone survives!

The Incredibly True Adventures of Two Girls in Love was added to Netflix in the US & Canada on June 18, 2024.

Before Tibette, we had Randy & Evie

Before Laurel Holloman was Tina Kennard and one-half of the iconic ship “Tibette” in The L Word, she was Randy Dean and fell in love with Evie in the movie The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love back in 1995. Starring alongside Laurel Holloman as “Randy Dean” is Nicole Ari Parker (Boogie Nights, How it Ends) as Evie.

Randy and Evie are very different in many ways, but they are also clearly drawn to each other.

The official plot of The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love is:

An adventurous love story between two young women of different social and economic backgrounds who find themselves going through all the typical struggles of a new romance.

The runtime is just 1 hour and 34 minutes. Also, it is rated R due to the scenes between the two main characters.

Netflix Pride month hit and miss

During another Pride season, Netflix made the funny mistake of adding the horror movie The Babadook to the LGBTQ selection. We all decided that it represented the B in LGBTQ+ and had a good laugh.

For 2024, however, Netflix has managed to hit the proverbial nail on the head with the addition of this iconic WLW movie.

When watching this movie, it’s easy to see that it’s nearly 30 years old. Still, I suspect that many people watching it will still feel that it resonates with them. Whether you were a teenager when the movie came out in 1995 and can recognize the world, or you’re young today and still nervous about coming out.

Dedicated to the filmmaker’s first girlfriend

The movie was written and directed by Maria Maggenti, who even dedicated the movie to her first girlfriend. With a very peculiar dedication that could be understood in more ways than one.

The dedication comes right before the end credits begin. It reads:

For My First Girlfriend May Our Relationship Finally Rest In Peace

Yeah, that’s a message with some layers to it.

A queer filmmaker

If the name Maria Maggenti seems familiar, it may be because, in recent years, she’s written and produced episodes of TV series such as UnREAL, Supergirl, and Motherland: Fort Salem. In other words, series with strong WLW couples and even a few wishful WLW ships that never came to fruition.

Also, in 2006 she wrote and directed Puccini for Beginners which also features a lesbian love story.

This time with adults though this doesn’t make things much less complicated. Just complicated in a different way. In Puccini for Beginners, the two women frolicking (oh yes, I said it) are Elizabeth Reaser (The Haunting of Hill House) and Gretchen Mol (Nightflyers).

You should also expect to recognize a few other familiar faces when watching The Incredibly True Adventures of Two Girls in Love on Netflix. For me, Dale Dickey of the True Blood and A League of Their Own series was one. And Toby Poser, an independent filmmaker powerhouse with her family, was another.

Everything Now season 2? Will there be more seasons of the LGBTQ+ Netflix series? Here’s what we know about a possible renewal so far!

Will we get Everything Now Season 2 on Netflix? That’s what everyone is wondering after watching the final episode of season 1. The brilliant new LGBTQ+ series on Netflix was released in early October 2023, so we’ve been waiting for an update ever since then.

We loved this Netflix series which was chockfull of LGBTQ+ characters and storylines.

Season 1 does end in such a way that many questions are answered and issues are resolved. Still, there is so much more to work with in Everything Now. Also, we’ve gotten to know a bit more about the home life of some characters, but far from everyone.

In other words, there is plenty of material to continue the series with.

Will EVERYTHING NOW get a season 2 renewal?

UPDATE: On April 5, 2024, Dylan Brady revealed in an interview with Film Updates that Netflix has canceled Everything Now, so there will not be a season 2!

“I had written a script for season two… We had some great ideas but we are at the mercy of the algorithm, I’m afraid. It’s really difficult because historically, TV has worked in one way, which is a slow, consistent growth over several seasons as opposed to this kind of mentality we see now, where it’s like, ‘If it doesn’t get 16 million views in the first 28 days, it’s not worth anyone’s while.’

It’s really disheartening to see because I think there’s also a lot of people who refuse to invest in a new show with the knowledge that it might just end up getting canceled. I hope that landscape will change and I hope that we can stop treating art and television as a commodity that’s at the mercy of an algorithm because an algorithm isn’t people, and things often just do take a bit of time. When they’re given the space to grow, they can turn into really wonderful things.”

As of November 20, 2023, the fate of the LGBTQ+ teen series remains uncertain. Netflix has yet to announce a renewal for a second season, and many of us are getting worried.

While there is currently no official confirmation, it’s important to note that Netflix typically takes time to evaluate viewership metrics before making decisions about renewals or cancellations.

Given that the first season was released on October 6, 2023, it’s not uncommon for the streaming giant to withhold renewal announcements until later.

Netflix weighs various factors in its renewal process, including critical acclaim, production costs, and most crucially, viewing hours. If the first season accumulates a substantial number of viewing hours within a specified timeframe and meets Netflix’s standards, the likelihood of a second season increases.

Netflix and the death of lesbian series

The above factors of viewing hours during the early days of release are the official way of getting a renewal from Netflix.

However, it’s no secret that Netflix (along with other streaming giants) is infamous for canceling series with LGBTQ+ main characters. It tends to be especially bad for Netflix series with lesbian (or bisexual) main characters, which is why we are eagerly awaiting news of a renewal.

EXAMPLE OF A CANCELED LGBTQ SERIES

One of the more grotesque examples is First Kill which was one of the most watched series on the streaming platform as it came out. Still, it was canceled soon after its release.

Often, they get canceled after the first season. As it was also the case with the amazing I Am Not Okay With This. However, it can also be very early after the second season has been released, which means it can hardly be due to a lack of viewers.

Yeah, I’m thinking of Warrior Nun and One Day at a Time. To name just the two first that come to mind. Also two examples of stories that came back to life in miraculous ways after the fans spoke up!

Everything Now off to a great start

Fortunately for the Everything Now series, early reviews for season 1 of Everything Now have been predominantly positive. Also, the production costs appear manageable. This bodes well for the series. Yet, the key determinant is [supposedly] still the viewership hours.

Season 1 ends with both answers and a lot of open endings, so clearly the producers were very aware that it can go either way.

To support the chances of Everything Now Season 2, it’s essential for fans to spread the word about the show. If you’re eager to see Mia and her friends’ stories continue, share the series with everyone you know.

Everything Now Season 2 Renewal Prediction

The future of Everything Now‘s second season remains uncertain. It was never labeled as a mini-series or limited series, which means it has been “born” as a new series with potential for multiple seasons.

Also, the show’s narrative conclusion deliberately leaves the door ajar for the possibility of additional stories. Both for Mia and her friends.

The trailer for Olivia Wilde’s movie Booksmart is finally here. Before you watch it, here’s a little about the movie itself.

The movie is directed by Olivia Wilde and yes, this is her first (but hopefully far from last) time directing a feature film. She has already done a few short films, so she’s hardly new to this job.

The supporting cast is chock full of familiar faces; Lisa Kudrow and Will Forte play the parents of Amy (Kaitlyn Dever) and Jason Sudeikis (husband of Olivia Wilde) is the High School principal.

Also in the cast are Jessica Williams (The Daily Show), Billie Lourd (Star Wars), Skyler Gisondo (Santa Clarita Diet), Molly Gordon (Animal Kingdom), and Diana Silvers (Ma).

The stars of Booksmart

Booksmart stars Kaitlyn Dever who co-starred with Captain Marvel‘s Brie Larson in Short Term 12 (2013) before being on TV series such as Justified and Last Man Standing. Also, we know from the trailer that Amy (Kaitlyn Dever) is gay.

So Booksmart already has that going for itself. As far as I’m concerned anyway!

As the best friend of Kaitlyn Dever’s character, Amy, we have Beanie Feldstein as Molly. You may know Beanie Feldstein from Greta Gerwig’s brilliant movie Lady Bird. Also, she’s in the upcoming TV series version of What We Do In the Shadows, which is a horror comedy by Taika Waititi and Jermaine Clement.

With these two whipsmart and charming young women leading the shenanigans, I’m definitely ready for Booksmart!

The plot of Booksmart

While the plot of Booksmart may not sound very new or innovative, it actually is. This type of plot usually revolves around young men heading off for college. This time, we follow two young women. And they are every bit as flawed and charming as their previous male counter parts.

The script is written by Katie Silberman, who also co-wrote the Netflix movie Isn’t It Romantic. Isn’t It Romantic came out on Netflix in February 2019 and stars Rebel Wilson and Liam Hemsworth along with Adam Devine, Priyanka Chopra, Betty Gilpin, and Jennifer Saunders as Rebel Wilson’s mom.

The movie just premiered at SXSW on March 10, 2019. Booksmart will be out in US theaters from May 24, 2019.

Finally, a release date for My Days Of Mercy is here. The LGBTQ movie starring and produced by Ellen Page and Kate Mara originally premiered at TIFF back in 2017. It will be out in select theaters and on Digital VOD in the spring of 2019. 

The release date for My Days of Mercy has been a long time coming. After the movie premiered at TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival), the only chance of watching it was at other film festivals.

Earlier, the title of the movie was simply Mercy, but I have to admit I prefer this title. Maybe because this title was already attached by the time I watched it.

My Days of Mercy released in 2019

Since the movie is being released in the spring of 2019, all trailers now feature that year.

The official trailer from Lionsgate (which we’ve included here) is listed as “MY DAYS OF MERCY official trailer (2019)”.

However, have no fear, this is indeed the movie you’ve been waiting for since the 2017 world premiere.

Ellen Page stars as Lucy with Kate Mara playing the title role (sort of) as Mercy. I only include the “sort of” comment since this movie is also about the death penalty, so mercy is both the name of a character and the concept of having or showing mercy.

Lionsgate will release My Days of Mercy directly On Demand, so you can watch it on your preferred VOD platform. Also, it will be out in select theaters (or limited release, if you will). Look out for any screenings, if you live in a city such as Los Angeles or New York.

The movie was directed by the brilliant Tali Shalom-Ezer and I am so happy her movie will finally reach a larger audience.

We simply love female-centered sci-fi movies! Being fans of both the sci-fi genre and awesome female characters, it just works out as the perfect combination. That’s why we’re beyond excited that 2019 gives us 5 movies, we can look forward to.

And these are all major Hollywood productions, so you know everyone will be looking to see if they can succeed. We’re not too worried though. It’s looking like a damn fine line-up to us!

Captain Marvel 

This Captain Marvel movie is already long overdue. While Black Widow has become the quintessential side-kick, almost all the male Avengers have gotten movies of their own. Now it’s (finally!) time for one of the most powerful characters to have her story told. 

After the huge success of DC Comic’s Wonder Woman, it seems “people” are finally ready for Marvel to let their female characters shine. Can Captain Marvel take down Thanos? Well, if anybody can, it’s her!

Plot: Carol Danvers becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races.

Dark Phoenix

From The Avengers to X-Men, there are actually quite a few amazing female characters. And just like Carol Danver’s Captain Marvel, Jean Grey is another one of the strongest characters in Marvel’s universe.

We loved Jean Grey whether she was portrayed by the brilliant Famke Janssen or the young super talent, Sophie Turner. Dark Phoenix stars Sophie Turner as a young Jean Grey. This time around, Jessica Chastain is also part of the cast along with most of the other X-Men from the previous movies.

Plot: Jean Grey begins to develop incredible powers that corrupt and turn her into a Dark Phoenix. Now the X-Men will have to decide if the life of a team member is worth more than all the people living in the world.

The New Mutants

Yes, we’re staying in the world of X-Men with a movie that focuses on the new mutants of the world. The cast is lead by the young talents Anya Taylor-Joy and Maisie Williams.

Most probably know Anya Taylor-Joy from either her breakthrough performance in The Witch or M. Night Shyamalan’s Split and the upcoming Glass.

Maisie Williams is still best known for her role on Game of Thrones where she’s the sister of Sophie Turner’s characters. Yes, it seems X-Men also run in the Stark family. 

Plot: Five young mutants, just discovering their abilities while held in a secret facility against their will, fight to escape their past sins and save themselves.

Stars: Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, Antonio Banderas, Alice Braga, Charlie Heaton, Blu Hunt

Untitled Terminator Reboot

Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger are reprising their roles as Sarah Connor and The Terminator, respectively. Sarah Connor went from the “damsel in distress” in the first Terminator movie to being completely in-charge in the sequel!

Next to Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver’s character in the Alien franchise), she is probably the most famous and popular female hero – outside any DC Comic or Marvel characters. As a bonus, we also get two extra kick-ass ladies in Mackenzie Davis and Natalia Reyes.

Mackenzie Davis is one of my favorite people acting today. She has already played so many brilliant characters. Cameron Howe in the too-short-lived amazing AMC show Halt and Catch Fire is an obvious go-to. But she was also brilliant in the Black Mirror episode “San Junipero” (a personal favorite)

Basically, I’m very happy and extremely excited about this upcoming Terminator reboot. 

Plot: Well, the plot for the untitled Terminator reboot is still unknown.

Star Wars: Episode IX

You can’t talk about sci-fi and female-centered stories without mentioning the current Star Wars trilogy. Instead of Luke Skywalker (with Princess Leia on the side), we now have Daisy Ridley starring in the trilogy as Rey.

Yes, I love her character. And no, she absolutely should not be with Kylo Ren. Rey is her own hero and hopefully, she will also be a hero for everyone else. This third Star Wars sequel movie will also be the last time we get to see Carrie Fisher as General Organa through archive footage shot before her all-too premature demise. 

And yes, the bikini-wearing Princess became the respected General of the rebels. What’s not to like? Of course, it’s no surprise that Natalie Portman’s daughter became a General. [Natalie Portman played Queen Amidala, or just Padmé, in Star Wars episodes I, II, and III]

Plot: The conclusion of the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Daisy Ridley is our female lead as the Jedi to be.
