The new Spanish thriller series That Night (org. title: Esa noche) just dropped on Netflix. While the Arbizu sisters are at the center of the mystery, it’s the woman who married into the family who’s the beating heart of every scene she’s in. Her name is Luisa, and she’s the most lovable LGBTQ character.

That Night is a six-episode Spanish-language limited series that premiered on Netflix on March 13, 2026. It’s based on a book by a UK author, so it’s already generating buzz for its tense, layered thriller plot. When a young single mother gets embroiled in a murder during an island getaway, her sisters rush to help — but only make things worse.

It’s gripping, gritty, and full of moral chaos. However, for LGBTQ viewers, there’s something else entirely worth talking about: Luisa. The lovable wife of one of the Arbizu sisters.

Who Is Luisa in That Night on Netflix?

Luisa is the wife of Paula (played by Elite and Las Pelotaris 1926 alum Claudia Salas), the eldest of the three Arbizu sisters. She’s portrayed by Nüll García, and from the moment she appears on screen, something becomes abundantly clear — Luisa is the emotional backbone of this entire family.

Not just of the couple. Of everyone.

All three sisters — Paula, Cris (Paula Usero), and Elena (Clara Galle) — trust and love Luisa. In a show where loyalties shift, secrets pile up, and no one is entirely innocent, Luisa is the one person everyone seems to genuinely want in their corner.

She’s warm, steady, and perceptive in ways the blood relatives sometimes aren’t with each other.

Also, it’s worth noting that in a series like That Night, where everyone has untreated trauma, Luisa is the only one who has gone to therapy. A past relationship left her broken, so she took action to heal. The Arbizu sisters never did, and so their lives are the direct result of childhood trauma.

Well, that and a father who made sure they were never allowed to heal.

The One Person Who Won’t Accept Her — and Why It Says Everything

There is, of course, one notable exception to understanding Luisa’s universal warmth: the family patriarch. Despite how clearly his daughters love and rely on Luisa, their father never fully recognizes her as part of the family. It’s a painful dynamic that many LGBTQ viewers will recognize immediately.

The partner who is embraced by everyone except the one person whose acceptance feels most loaded.

What makes Luisa’s situation particularly compelling is why the father keeps her at arm’s length. It doesn’t appear to be simple homophobia (though that’s surely part of the architecture), nor is it simply his religion. Luisa simply won’t enable or excuse the patriarch’s trauma-inflicting behavior.

She sees it clearly, she won’t pretend otherwise, and that refusal to comply costs her his approval. In other words, his rejection of Luisa says considerably more about him than it does about her.

Paula, for her part, carries the weight of her father’s patterns in a different way. She has a fierce temper, and it’s not hard to connect that to growing up in this family. Her protectiveness over their relationship, over Luisa, reads as someone who has had to fight for her own love and dignity.

It’s complicated, real, and the show doesn’t flatten it.

The LGBTQ Representation in That Night Avoids Dreaded Trope

Here’s the thing that makes the queer storyline in That Night genuinely worth celebrating: outside of the father’s behavior, the lesbian couple is simply accepted. By the sisters. By the world of the show. Their marriage isn’t treated as a scandal or a secret or a source of external conflict.

It just is.

And — minor spoiler — while That Night is not a feel-good series (no one really ends up in a particularly happy place by the end), this Netflix series does not resort to the tired and harmful “Bury Your Gays” trope. The lesbians survive.

I recognize it’s a low bar. And yet it remains one we must explicitly clear in 2026.

Paula Usero as Cris: A Beloved Face Returns to LGBTQ Audiences

For eagle-eyed queer TV fans, the casting of Paula Usero as the middle sister, Cris, carries an extra layer of meaning. Paula Usero is especially known for her role as Luisita Gómez in Amar es para siempre and its spin-off #Luimelia, where she plays one half of the lesbian romantic lead couple.

That storyline became something of a phenomenon. The couple of Luisita and Amelia spread like wildfire across the world. You saw people falling in love with their storyline from countries in every corner of the globe.

The response was so intense that it led directly to the dedicated spin-off: #Luimelia, which rescues the two iconic characters and transfers them from the late 1970s to the present day. All while being played by the same wonderful actors.

The spin-off even won the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Spanish-Language Scripted Television Series. Don’t miss out on it if you can find it. It has 26 episodes of one of the most beloved lesbian couples in Spanish television history.

Seeing Paula Usero in That Night, despite playing a different character entirely, is a quiet treat for the community that fell in love with her as Luisita. She remains a compelling screen presence, and That Night uses her well.

Why Luisa Matters In That Night on Netflix

In a genre full of crime, cover-ups, and moral compromise, Luisa stands out precisely because she doesn’t compromise. She loves fiercely. And she’s trusted completely by the people who matter. Always refusing to make herself smaller for a man who won’t grant her the basic dignity of recognition.

That’s not just good LGBTQ representation — that’s good character writing, and important messaging to all women.

Nüll García brings a quiet authority to the role that lingers. In a show about how far people will go for family, Luisa quietly demonstrates what it looks like when someone is family — whether the patriarch admits it or not.

For Womentainment, Accused isn’t just another psychological drama with a new take on #MeToo. This is a narrative grenade rolled gently into a space that has long been dominated by one archetype: the powerful male doctor, the whispered allegations, the unraveling wife at home.

With Accused, Netflix flips the lens.

Well, to a point, anyway, as we do wind up with another trope: The lesbian predator. Whether the queer doctor in Accused is truly a predator is the question waiting to be answered. In many ways, this is reminiscent of Tár, starring Cate Blanchett. Only, instead of a conductor, this time the woman is a doctor. A gynecologist, no less.

Also, this plays out in the UK, but it’s an Indian Netflix production, and much is in Hindi (unless you choose a dubbed version, which I never recommend).

Directed by Anubhuti Kashyap and starring Konkona Sensharma and Pratibha Rannta, Accused centers on Dr. Geetika Sen, a celebrated surgeon accused of sexual misconduct. But here’s the tectonic shift: she is married to a woman.

And that changes everything.

When the “Accused” Isn’t a Man

Stories about sexual misconduct have a familiar silhouette. A powerful man. A younger woman. A wife in the shadows.

Accused disrupts that silhouette.

Geetika is not the usual suspect. She is a woman in power. A surgeon and gynecologist. A spouse in a same-sex marriage. A figure of authority in a profession built on trust and bodily autonomy. When allegations surface, the narrative doesn’t just question her innocence. It interrogates our assumptions.

Because when the accused is a woman, especially a lesbian woman, the cultural script glitches.

Society often frames women as default victims, not perpetrators. Queer women, in particular, are frequently desexualized or romanticized in media. Well, with the “lesbian predator” trope, which is thankfully a thing of the past.

For the most part, as here it becomes a theme yet again… but not in a bad way, per se.

Otherwise, we are now seen more as lovers, artists, or rebels. Rarely are we depicted as figures capable of crossing ethical lines in positions of institutional power.

That discomfort is the real psychological thriller here.

A Lesbian Marriage Under Scrutiny

The emotional core of the film lies not only in public judgment but in private fracture. Geetika’s marriage to Dr. Meera becomes a pressure chamber. Trust is no longer automatic. Loyalty is no longer pure. Love is forced to coexist with doubt.

And this matters.

Queer relationships in mainstream Indian cinema have often been framed as fragile blossoms fighting societal prejudice. The conflict typically comes from outside: family rejection, legal barriers, and cultural stigma.

In Accused, the conflict erupts from within. However, again, Accused also deals with those other issues. Not least, as the women are both from India, but are living freely in the UK now.

The film dares to portray a lesbian marriage not as symbolic activism, not as tragedy porn, but as a complex adult relationship navigating betrayal, ambiguity, and moral uncertainty. That normalization is powerful. It says: queer couples do not exist only to represent struggle. They exist to represent humanity in all its mess.

Power, Gender, and the Double Bind

A woman in power is already navigating a tightrope. A lesbian woman in power carries even more invisible weight.

If Geetika is innocent, is she being judged more harshly because she defies expectations? If she is guilty, does that complicate feminist narratives that center women primarily as victims?

The film does not rush toward clarity, and that restraint is strategic. As Kashyap has said, the story resists easy answers. It lingers in ambiguity, forcing audiences to confront their own biases.

And perhaps the most radical move is this: Accused does not sanitize its queer protagonist. It does not make her morally pure to earn audience sympathy. It allows her to be complicated.

That alone feels like progress.

Why The 2026 Netflix Accused Story Matters Now

In global conversations around #MeToo and workplace accountability, queer dynamics are often underexplored. Power does not disappear simply because both parties are women. Consent does not become uncomplicated because gender binaries blur.

By centering a lesbian doctor accused of misconduct, Accused widens the discourse. It acknowledges that abuse of power is about hierarchy, not just gender. It challenges audiences to think beyond the familiar villain archetype.

And crucially, it does so without turning the queer relationship into spectacle. Again, this was also covered in Tár, but with the 2026 Netflix movie Accused, there is the added pressure of the accused woman being a queer person of color.

A New Chapter for Queer Representation on Netflix?

Dharma Productions has backed a story that feels quietly disruptive. Rather than building drama through sensational courtroom theatrics, the film appears to rely on emotional stillness, silence, and psychological tension.

The result is a rare thing: a queer-centered story that isn’t about coming out, isn’t about homophobia, isn’t about forbidden love. It’s about power. Trust. Reputation. And the terrifying space between truth and perception.

In a media landscape that often flattens queer women into symbols, Accused gives us something more unsettling and more honest.

A protagonist who is not a stereotype.
A marriage that is not ornamental.
A story that asks us who we believe and why.

And perhaps the boldest question of all:
When the accused is a woman, are we ready to look at her the same way?

Don’t Expect Too Much Affection from Accused (2026)

For queer women expecting to see the married couple being a married couple in a physical sense, there will be disappointment. On the one hand, I acknowledge that this isn’t the point of the story. On the other hand, you would never have seen a straight married couple interact with so little physical romance shown on screen.

So, make sure you set your expectations accordingly to avoid disappointment. A good follow-up movie could be I Can’t Think Straight. Just to see a wonderful love story play out in a similar setting and circumstances.

Who saw this coming on Stranger Things season 5: Robin Buckley (Maya Hawke) becomes the Queer Elder to Will Byers (Noah Schnapp), and helps him tap into the powers he had all along. Obviously, it’s made even better by the fact that these two actors are both part of the LGBTQ+ community in real life.

No, not both as queer people, though both are outspoken advocates for the community. Noah Schnapp is gay, and Maya Hawke is a fierce ally who fought to make Robin Buckley a lesbian in the first place.

A beautiful “Friend of Dorothy”-moment

You know how in The Wizard of Oz, when Glinda tells Dorothy: “You’ve always had the power“?

Well, that’s pretty much what happens in Stranger Things Season 5. Only it’s the lesbian Robin Buckley, who talks to Will Byers, as she senses that the two have a lot more in common than just being part of the kids responsible for saving Hawkins from the Upside Down.

Basically, Robin becomes the Queer Elder and helps Will realize that there is immense power in being true to oneself. In the case of Robin and Will, this means their gay self. As long as they are hiding their own truth, they are holding back.

The power of coming out to oneself

Rather than Will Byers having a classic “Coming out” moment, it’s Robin recognizing Will and allowing him to have someone who relates to him as a gay person. It shows the power of coming out to oneself, which is always the first step.

Sure, it seems Will knew he was gay, but he didn’t feel safe or recognized as such. Until now!

It all begins when Robin is kissing her love interest, Vicki (out queer actor Amybeth McNulty), and Will catches a glimpse of them. To many, this might look like Will is being a perv, checking out some girl-on-girl kissing. To those who have been paying attention (and/or are gay), it’s obvious something else is going on.

From fear to acceptance

Robin is out to Steve Harrington, which happened in Season 3, when Robin entered as a character and became friends with Steve. Both worked at the ice cream shop Scoops Ahoy, and Robin initially loathed Steve because her first girl crush fell for the hunky Steve, and not her.

Anyway, Robin isn’t out otherwise and is nervous that Will saw her kissing Vicki. However, this changes when Robin recognizes something else is going on. She starts paying more attention to where Will looks and how he acts. As one does when recognizing a fellow gay.

Realizing Will Byers is gay, and trying to accept this about himself, she starts talking to him about her own experience with realizing she was gay. The two bond, and in the final showdown of Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 1, Will is finally able to lean into the power inside himself.

It truly is a “You’ve always had the power” moment, and it seems Will Byers, accepting himself, is as powerful as Eleven… maybe even the supervillain Vecna!

How powerful is Will?

In Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 2, we will likely see just how powerful Will Byers is now. One thing is for sure: Being true to himself was a real power boost.

Maybe Robin Buckley will also tap into that courage she awakened in Will. As Volume 1 ended, she was forced to cancel a second planned date with Vicki. Obviously, Vicki is probably quite upset by now. In fact, it’s possible Robin simply stood up Vicki this second time around.

Personally, I can’t wait to see just how powerful Will is now, and how Robin will make it up to Vicki.

Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 2 is coming to Netflix on December 25, 2025.

THE BEAST IN ME is a new Netflix series where Claire Danes plays a lesbian author. Yes, finally, My So-called Life‘s Angela Chase grew up to be queer. We always knew she would. Plus, the actual plot of the series is absolutely phenomenal.

Yes, Claire Danes is the star of THE BEAST IN ME on Netflix, and she’s a lesbian. It’s not a huge thing in the plot, it simply is. And it is glorious. At long last, Angela Chase (Claire Danes’ iconic angsty teen character from My So-Called Life) grew up to be a queer adult.

That’s hardly a surprise for any LGBTQ+ person who grew up watching the show. Sure, Angela Chase was all about Jordan Catalano, who was portrayed by Jared Leto. So was I, for a while. I mean, that man was so pretty, he might as well have been a cute lesbian.

Also, we saw Wilson Cruz portray Rickie Vasquez, a gay teenager, as one of Angela’s best friends. The other was Rayanne Graff, portrayed by A.J. Langer, and the relationship between Angela and Rayanne was always an emotional rollercoaster.

As are most teen relationships. Particularly between girls, I suppose.

Want to see Claire Danes play gay?!

My point, and I do have one, is that I always felt Angela Chase was a queer character, and have been dreaming of seeing Claire Danes play gay. Now, with The Beast in Me, we have arrived at this destination, and I am one happy queer camper.

Especially as the Netflix series is absolutely brilliant.

She even stars across from Matthew Rhys (who famously played a gay character in Brothers & Sisters), and the two deliver delicious powerhouse performances. It’s the classic straight man meets a lesbian and is fascinated that she isn’t immediately taken in by his charm. Also, he might be a serial killer. That’s a big part of the plot.

In any case, the result is that he respects Aggie and enjoys her company, because she couldn’t care less about impressing him. And he knows she doesn’t want him – it’s like Emma Thompson famously described her working relationship with Hugh Grant.

In fact, if anything, Aggie’s more interested in his wife, who does also seem quite… inviting?!

So many queer (or LGBTQ-adjacent) cast members

Of course, the wife of Matthew Rhys’ character is also portrayed by Brittany Snow, who recently delivered a deliciously queer portrayal in The Hunting Wives across from Malin Åkerman. And was famously (or should I say: infamously) one half of the super-queerbaiting non-couple in the Pitch Perfect franchise.

Disclaimer: I feel confident that both Anna Kendrick and Brittany Snow would gladly have made “Bechloe” a real thing. There’s even a blooper showing them kissing each other instead of their respective male love interest.

Incidentally, several cast members from Pitch Perfect have also come out as queer in recent years. Most notably, Rebel Wilson, who now has a wife and child. And most recently, Anna Camp, who is happily in love with a woman.

Also, Brittany Snow has kissed women on screen before. Including kissing Sophia Bush in John Tucker Must Die (2006), and now Sophia Bush is also in a relationship with a woman in real life. Yes, I do realize this piece is turning into a “six degrees of queer separation”.

And I love it!

Getting back to Claire Danes in The Beast in Me, I should also mention that Aggie’s ex-wife in The Beast in Me is portrayed by Natalie Morales. She is an actor who has played queer characters in several productions, including Santa Clarita Diet, Dead to Me, and, most recently (and sadly), in Grey’s Anatomy.

Also, Natalie Morales is an out queer person in real life.

DO BRITTANY SNOW AND NATALIE MORALES KISS IN THE BEAST IN ME?

Fair warning, and tiny spoiler here, despite rumors of a kiss, I can reveal that Brittany Snow and Natalie Morales do not kiss in The Beast in Me. So, don’t get hyped up for that and be disappointed.

This is a great Netflix series, but it does not give us a kiss between Brittany and Natalie. Nor would it make much sense in the setting of its plot.

Claire Danes is married…

For the record, Claire Danes has been married to Hugh Dancy in real life since 2009, and they have three children. Hugh Dancy is a British actor who has not shied away from taking on queer roles himself.

Not least in Hannibal, where he starred and had a very homoerotic (and deeply troubling) relationship with Mads Mikkelsen’s title character.

Fun fact: Hettienne Park co-stars in The Beast in Me as an FBI agent. She is straight in this Netflix series, but she did play a possibly gay lady (it wasn’t made canon) in Hannibal.

Bottom line: Do not miss out on The Beast in Me on Netflix. Claire Danes is brilliant as the lesbian author, Aggie Wiggs, who is as flawed as she is unapologetically gay.

Giving them a world where they are still young and able-bodied. In the real world offline, both women are elderly and each has their own health issues.

While Yorkie is shy and new to this world, Kelly is confident, flirtatious, and also quite resistant to commitment. As their bond deepens, both are forced to face past regrets and questions of immortality. Ultimately, they do choose love – and eternity – together.

This is U-hauling to a happy ending in the extreme… and I love it. San Junipero and Imagine Me & You are my two WLW happy places.

• Gugu Mbatha-Raw stars as Kelly: The magnetic, emotionally guarded woman with a tragic past. Gugu Mbatha-Raw brings warmth, nuance, and strength to the role, making Kelly instantly iconic.

🏨 Episode Recap: Hotel Reverie (Season 7, Episode 3)

Brandy Friday has grown tired of playing the roles Hollywood wants to see her in. She would much rather try something else. Like a role where she gets the girl as portrayed by her favorite actress, Dorothy Chambers. Unfortunately for Brandy, Dorothy died before she was even born, so she can only see her on the screen.

This changes when a new technology enables present-day actors to be inserted into an old movie. Like “Hotel Reverie”, which was the one that made Dorothy Chambers an icon before her untimely death shortly after making the movie. The technology is pretty much identical to the one used for the San Junipero episode, so we’re off to a good start.

Also, to create the ideal conditions for the Hotel Reverie world in the system, footage from behind the scenes and other input (anything and everything available from print, radio, or on camera) has been included. The result is that the character from the original movie, Clara, has been combined with the actress portraying her: Dorothy Chambers.

Inside the World of Hotel Reverie

Brandy missed part of her “onboarding” package and has no idea she will be placed inside the movie, standing directly across from Clara/Dorothy. Surely, she expected a green screen solution rather than one where it feels like she is physically there. Exactly like we first witnessed with the San Junipero world.

After being placed inside the world of Hotel Reverie, there is an issue with the software. In our world, the problem is solved within an hour. Inside “Hotel Reverie”, Brandy and Clara/Dorothy spend days and weeks together. Falling in love and getting to know one another.

Also, Clara discovers that she’s Dorothy and is reminded that she fell in love with a female make-up artist while making the movie originally. Once the software starts working again, the character of Clara gets back on script while Brandy remembers everything that happened.

Brandy discovers she could stay in the world of Hotel Reverie with Clara/Dorothy. Sadly, Clara (unknowingly) makes a choice that makes this impossible. It’s not the happy ending we all wanted, but the two never lived in the same timeline, so it seemed doomed from the onset.

Back in our world, Brandy is feeling sad and lost as the updated version of Hotel Reverie becomes a success. A package arrives with an old telephone that enables her to call Dorothy Chambers. This enables the two women to continue talking to one another across time, but this is all they will ever be able to have.

Side note: The fictional Dorothy Chambers character feels like a lot of Hollywood leading ladies rolled up into one. There are obvious Marilyn Monroe elements, along with iconic ladies from the Golden Age of Hollywood. Those who were rumored to love other leading ladies more than their leading men.

🎭 Who Stars in Hotel Reverie?

• Issa Rae stars as Brandy: Though she is a very successful actor, she’s dreaming of escaping her pigeonhole roles. She wants to try something different. Without realizing it, she is suddenly acting directly across from her idol and crush. Issa Rae ultimately delivers a vulnerable and emotionally raw performance that anchors the story in authenticity.

• Emma Corrin stars as Clara/Dorothy: Clara is a character in an iconic Hollywood movie (think Ingrid Bergman’s Ilsa in Casablanca), but this gets mixed in with the person portraying her, the actress Dorothy Chambers. Emma Corrin is equal parts charming and unpredictable as the iconic leading lady Dorothy, portraying Clara. The combination of these two results in someone who dares to be bold and honest.

While Hotel Reverie has a lot going for it – not least Issa Rae and Emma Corrin in the two lead roles – it cannot top the San Junipero episode for me. With that iconic world of San Junipero, nothing could hurt our two ladies in love. In the world of Hotel Reverie, they seemed doomed to be apart.

How can San Junipero not be the best WLW episode when we get all this:

• One of the few happy endings for lesbian couples in speculative fiction.

• Allowing queer characters to be flawed, joyful, and fully human — not just symbols.

• Chemistry between Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Mackenzie Davis that feels timeless.

• Emotional stakes that feel huge, but still we’re rewarded with love without tragedy.

Of course, Charlie Brooker could create a follow-up episode where he mixes the worlds of San Junipero and Hotel Reverie. Enabling Brandy to be with Dorothy. A woman born in a time when she could not act on what was in her heart. One whose life was cut short and is certainly deserving of another chance at love.

With Season 7 of Black Mirror, creator Charlie Brooker just made a sequel episode to an episode from Season 4, so you never know what might happen. In the end, there’s room in the Black Mirror universe for both stories to shine – and room for more to come.

One is a beacon of love, the other a cautionary tale about how far technology can reach into our hearts.

So, if you’re in the mood for hope, healing, and a romance that defies time and space, Kelly and Yorkie in San Junipero are the undeniable champs. If you prefer messy love that seems impossible but manages to defy the odds for a while, then Brandy and Dorothy in Hotel Reverie bring a complex, unforgettable WLW love story.
