Hacks is a show I have adored since the first season, but not until now have we had enough foresight here at Womentainment to get our hands on some press screeners. Season 3 has nine half-hour episodes and I am as crazy about this season as the previous two. Which says a lot, I can tell you.

A year later and a little wiser

In season 3 of Hacks, we pick things up a year after parting. Season 2 ended with Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) essentially firing Ava (Hannah Einbinder). Not as any sort of punishment, but rather to help Ava move forward in her career.

Of course, she grossly underrated the importance of Ava in her personal life. Especially as a person who has a professional and personal life that is extremely intertwined. As does Ava, I might add!

In any case, it’s a year since they parted and Deborah Vance is still riding high off the success of her standup special. So much so that people will laugh at anything she says. It’s not exactly preferable for Deborah, who has been used to working for her success. Now she’s getting a taste of the gratuitous success where you cannot lose… until, of course, there’s a backlash.

But none of that is coming just yet, so Deborah Vance is still on top of the world. So is Ava who is pursuing new opportunities back in Los Angeles. She’s writing on a TV show that has exactly the kind of style and messaging, she lives for. Also, she has a new boss who thinks she’s amazing and wants to help further her career.

Do people ever really change?

For Ava, it isn’t just her career that is going well. Even her relationship with her ex-girlfriend-turned-girlfriend-again, Ruby (Lorenza Izzo), is swimming along wonderfully. Ruby has a role in a new DC-based TV series as the lead, so they’re both doing great. In fact, during her work hiatus, she’s going to Iceland where Ruby’s show is made.

Or that was certainly the plan until Deborah Vance called her up and asked for her help. In an almost cruel twist of fate, there’s a chance that Deborah could finally get the job of her dreams as the first woman hosting a late-night show. However, her new writers are not working out, so she needs Ava to make sure she can give it her very best shot.

Once again, Ava finds it impossible to resist when Deborah asks for her. Since this is a comedy series, there are many funny moments, but it is also a drama (or “dramedy” if you will) so there are many touching scenes as well.

Also, there’s a good shift in season 3, when Ava figures out that she can set boundaries and ask for things as well. It also becomes obvious to both lead characters that they’ve been influenced by one another. In good ways that allow them to see the world from a broader perspective, I might add.

Amazing casting in every single role

There are so many wonderful guest stars in season 3 of Hacks and if you’ve heard of just one, it’s probably Christina Hendricks as this has been part of the PR for season 3. It’s quite a rabbit hole that Ava (Hannah Einbinder) is about to go down – pun very much intended – when Christina Hendricks guest stars.

In season 3, Christina Hendricks plays a gay Republican oil heiress which virtually sums up everything Ava loathes. But she also comes in the shape of Christina Hendricks, so there’s that.

Other than this particular guest starring stint – which I definitely enjoyed in several ways – we see many other amazing actors in smaller roles. However, for me, it was also Deborah Vance’s amazing team of agents that had some great moments.

Co-creator Paul W. Downs as Jimmy has been amazing from the beginning, but so is Megan Staler as his assistant/co-founder, Kayla. They have a great story with Christopher Lloyd in one episode, and a recurring bit with Helen Hunt as well. Basically, you have a lot to look forward to in season 3.

Watch Hacks Season 3 weekly on Max and HBO!

Hacks was created by Lucia Aniello, Jen Statsky, and Paul W. Downs. It’s one of the most intelligent and fierce comedy series ever. Always looking at people and circumstances through different lenses thanks to the Ava and Deborah characters.

Also, Hacks is one of those series that you can’t just binge-watch unless you want to wait until the entire season has aired. And, trust me, you don’t want to wait. Personally, I’ve actually started appreciating having to wait. Okay, that’s easy for me to say when I’ve been able to watch a screener of the entire season.

However, I am not always that fortunate, and right now I love that Under the Bridge on Hulu is something I watch weekly instead of binge-watching it. Because if I could have, I most certainly would have!

Instead, I did a review of Under the Bridge based on the first two episodes over on Heaven of Horror. I had to struggle to hold myself back and simply said “…we can feel the tension and chemistry from their first scene together”. By episode 3, it became very apparent that my queer instincts were spot-on. Spoiler: They usually are!

Anyway, enough about Under the Bridge as this was supposed to be about Hacks. And yet, I get a feeling that you’ll be watching Hacks if you’ve watched the first two seasons, which is probably why I feel fine plugging Under the Bridge here.

Also, if you’ve watched Hannah Einbinder’s “God is real!” comment when asked about Christina Hendricks’s guest-starring role, then you’ll definitely be checking out season 3.

The nine-episode season will release two episodes each week until the season finale (episode 9) on May 30, 2023.

Hacks Season 3 is premiering on Max on May 2, 2024.

Womentainment Recommendation

Womentainment recommendation: Watch Hacks season 3 weekly!

I was a bit slow to start watching Hacks when season 1 came out. Maybe it was just being scared that it would get canceled – as far too many shows with LGBTQ core characters often are – but once I started, I was hooked.

Season 1 was great, season 2 had an extra layer, and with season 3 it feels like both Ava and Deborah have finally realized how much they need one another as people. They are actual friends and despite being wildly different, the two women respect each other in ways they don’t respect anyone else.

Also, yes, there’s the Christina Hendricks story, which is fun and great. Before we ever get that far, there’s also Ava enjoying domestic bliss with Ruby, so there are plenty of reasons to watch. Actually, even Deborah Vance herself gets some before the end of season 3. And that’s all I’ll say about that.

More than anything, if you’ve watched Hacks so far, you know you want to keep watching. If you still haven’t started, then you definitely will want to start watching now!

THE GIRLS ON THE BUS on Max is a new Max Original series (HBO Max in Europe) with 10 episodes. For me, ten episodes weren’t nearly enough, so I hope maybe it’ll be able to continue somehow. I mean, some people never stop campaigning – not even after winning the presidential election.

In any case, this Max Original isn’t about any real politicians. I mean, there is obvious inspiration, so you can see current (or former) presidential candidates represented in the characters of this series. For me, the four female journalists at the heart of this story worked perfectly. Often in imperfect ways which only made them more interesting and realistic.

Sadie, Sadie, reporting lady!

Yes, I did just reference a song from Funny Lady because I cannot hear the name “Sadie” and not have that song playing in my head. In any case, The Girls on the Bus focuses on Sadie McCarthy (Melissa Benoist), who is very openly a journalist who romanticizes campaign reporting.

And yes, she does tend to reference The Boys on the Bus, despite her boss also pointing out that much of their behavior would be an HR nightmare in today’s world.

By centering on Sadie, The Girls on the Bus takes us viewers on the campaign trail alongside three of her female journalist colleagues. All of them have very different styles and personalities which reflect both the various news outlets and ideologies. Also, just their difference in tone of voice.

From the Social Media influencer directness to the brazen propaganda-like style of television reporting and finally the newspaper journalists. The ones who triple-check their sources and do their best to stay unbiased and neutral. Well, okay, Sadie does battle quite a lot with the latter as she has a favorite candidate.

This landed her in hot water during the previous presidential election when her candidate didn’t win. Still, she’s ready to head out again and already knows she just might get heartbroken all over again.

The three other female journalists at the heart of this story (and the title characters) are all wonderful and brutal in their own ways.

Meet the Girls on the Bus

There’s Grace (Carla Gugino) who is also a newspaper journalist and grew up around politicians as her father works in the same field. Carla Gugino is always wonderful, yet in The Girls on the Bus, I found myself falling for her all over again. Okay, it doesn’t hurt that this character (not least her wardrobe) reminded me of my own wife.

Along with Grace, there is the TV reporter Kimberlyn (Christina Elmore) who is a black woman on a very white channel. Kimberlyn is fierce and direct but also knows what she’s up against. Most of the time it fuels her, but it also gets to her. How could it not?

Finally, there’s the newcomer, Lola (Natasha Behnam), a queer social media influencer. To stay on the campaign trail, she must mention various sponsors. She doesn’t like it, but that’s the deal she has. Also, she is clearly rooting for “her candidate”, who is very much the outsider as she is more “radical” than your average candidate.

WANT MORE TOUGH LADIES IN POLITICS?

Be sure to check out the HBO Orignal series The Regime starring Kate Winslet >

Basically, she just wants people to be able to exist and get an education or go to the hospital without being indebted for life. As a social media reporter, it should come as no surprise that she isn’t concerned with being neutral.

That is not her brand. She doesn’t work for a newspaper, TV station, or even a website. She is her own brand and needs to always stay on top of being true to herself. However, that can get in the way, when you want to be a decent person to the opposition. A small detail in the storyline that I really loved.

Especially as it shows just how divided the two sides have become. However, in The Girls on the Bus that is exactly what we learn: That despite their differences, the four women become a family of sorts. One that may not agree, but has each other’s backs.

I bought the book after watching episode 1

I have no problem admitting that I loved The Girls on the Bus series from the very first scene. Actually, I kept waiting for it to turn stupid somehow. Either by having a slow episode or a character act in a way that didn’t feel organic, but simply used to force the situation.

That moment just never came. Nor did I ever expect it to. I mean, I bought the book [Amy Chozick’s “Chasing Hillary”] that this Max series is based on after episode 1. This should tell you a lot!

It should come as no surprise that The Girls on the Bus is a very character-driven story. However, what I especially loved were all the flawed and realistic characters. Yes, the four girls on the campaign trail are among them, but really, every character was fleshed out to a larger extent than what we can usually hope for.

Whether it was a presidential candidate, love interest, friend, family member, or even colleague, we got to see enough to understand what made them tick. No one is entirely good or bad, they are just human. And what the four colleagues discover while on the campaign bus together is that everyone can learn something from another person.

Be that social media skills, the unwritten rules of the campaign trail, or not underestimating someone you know nothing about. There was always a lesson for each of them. And, not least, us viewers!

Back on the campaign trail

Having The Girls on the Bus coming out in 2024, just as the presidential election is really getting started, is perfect timing. Of course, it has already been a long time coming. Netflix began development on it in 2019. Then in September 2021, Netflix dropped the series and it moved to The CW. Finally, in February 2022, the series moved to then-HBO Max.

It was with HBO Max the production of the series finally started in October 2022. Now, here we are, getting 10 episodes from March to May of 2024, before the presidential election on November 5, 2024.

What I expect – and certainly hope – many will take away from watching The Girls on the Bus is that elections aren’t as binary as many seem to think. For some voters, the coverage and news are extremely black and white as the rhetoric is one-sided in favor of one candidate.

However, as this series focuses on, most journalists who respect and honor their profession, try to cover it all. This is an ongoing theme as the four journalists clearly have very different worldviews and ideologies. Still, they recognize that they need to listen to more than one side. And they especially have to respect that not everyone agrees.

We could all learn from that. In this Max series, the four main characters manage to learn without having to compromise on their own beliefs. That’s how democracy works!

Watch The Girls on the Bus series on Max

Creators Amy Chozick and Julie Plec are responsible for giving us this amazing new series. The Girls on the Bus is inspired by Amy Chozick’s experiences as a political reporter. Yes, she too has been on the campaign bus following multiple presidential candidates as they either make it or bow out.

Amy Chozick and Julie Plec (The Originals creator and showrunner) also serve as executive producers alongside Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter (Supergirl, You, The Flight Attendant), Leigh London Redman, Marcos Siega, and showrunner Rina Mimoun.

Also, the star of the series, Melissa Benoist, serves as a producer on the series. Good for her – I love seeing actors producing as well as star.

Whether you’re into politics or not – though really, anyone should be, and especially women right now – this Max Original is worth your time because the characters are so well written. The story is also intriguing and engaging, but without good characters, the story can never truly work.

Following these four female journalists on the campaign trail as they find friendship, love, and a scandal or two, is one of the best series I’ve watched in quite some time. So how can I not give it a top rating?! Enjoy!

Womentainment recommendation: A must-watch for everyone!

While The Girls on the Bus is all about the four women, it’s also about the media landscape, politics, and the people in their lives. Fortunately, this series has a brilliant cast of supporting (or recurring) actors as well.

Along with Melissa Benoist (Supergirl), Carla Gugino (Gunpowder Milkshake), Natasha Behnam, and Christina Elmore (Twenties) in the title roles, we see Brandon Scott (Dead to Me) and Griffin Dunne. Their two characters are perhaps most important as they work closely with Melissa Benoit’s Sadie, who the story centers on.

Also in key roles are Scott Foley, Mark Consuelos, Eric Stoltz, Kyle Vincent Terry, BD Wong, and Hettienne Park (The Outsider).

Overall, I loved that this was a very character-driven story. After all, politics and elections – democracy as a whole – is all about people. And, okay, the fact that the four female journalists at the heart of The Girls on the Bus were all awesome in their way didn’t hurt. Watch it for them!

The Girls on the Bus premieres on Max with its first two episodes on March 14, 2024. One weekly episode will be released following this with the series (or season, fingers crossed?) finale coming on May 9, 2024.

Kate Winslet reigns supreme

Not only does Kate Winslet play the lead role in The Regime, she also reigns supreme when it comes to starring in so many amazing HBO original limited series. I, for one, can never get enough of her.

From Mildred Pierce (2011) to Mare of Easttown (2021) and now The Regime, she is brilliant! Especially when we see yet another (and very different) side of her with this latest role.

The Regime tells the story of a modern authoritarian regime. Or rather, we follow it from inside the palace walls just as it begins to unravel. Chancellor Elena Vernham (Kate Winslet) has not left the palace for quite some time, and this has resulted in her getting increasingly paranoid and unstable.

While things look crazy when the story begins for us, it’s about to get a whole lot worse.

She’s attracted to people who follow her orders and command respect from everyone else. This describes the volatile soldier, Herbert Zubak (Matthias Schoenaerts), perfectly. Known by most as “The Butcher”, he becomes an unlikely confidant that influences her in strange ways.

Amazing supporting characters and cast

Chancellor Elena Vernham feels increasingly empowered to do whatever she wants. Unfortunately, for everyone, she makes several bold and very wrong choices. Always trying to expand her power will result in the country turning on her. Or will it?

And can someone like Elena Vernham ever truly lose?!

Along with Kate Winslet and Matthias Schoenaerts in the key roles, we also see Guillaume Gallienne as Elena’s husband, while Martha Plimpton is a US politician sent to deal with Elena. And failing in a terrible way.

Also, in one of the most interesting and heartfelt roles, we see Andrea Riseborough as Elena’s assistant. And so much more, as they practically share a child. You’ll see how that plays out. I loved how Agnes (Andrea Riseborough) was the only one who truly knew how to work within this regime. Without compromising on who she is!

Finally, Hugh Grant portrays Vernham’s political rival, who has a lot of screen time in one particular episode.

House of Cards meets The Handmaid’s Tale

If I were to compare it to some of the more recent successful series, I would say it’s House of Cards meets The Handmaid’s Tale as a darkly comedic series. And yes, that’s exactly as crazy and amazing as it sounds.

Seeing these crazy things play out and then realize that a lot of what happens isn’t unlike the events we’ve seen play out in real life.

From the actions of politicians and those around them to the terminology used, it all sounds eerily familiar to things you’ve seen and heard on the news. A whole lot of familiar descriptions of political opponents and even other countries.

Also, Kate Winslet’s Chancellor Elena Vernham clearly loves using the F-word, when she’s not in front of civilians. It’s absolutely f*cking brilliant to hear her cuss out all the old white men, who have no balls and just adhere to her every whim.

Sure, not doing so has consequences, but on the other hand, doing what she asks also has consequences for the people they represent. Still, they follow their leader unconditionally. Even though they’re bitching and moaning behind her back.

Sound at all familiar to any real-life “politicians” you might know?!

Watch The Regime on HBO and Max

Will Tracy (The Menu) is the creator and showrunner of this new HBO Original series. He also serves as executive producer along with Kate Winslet, Stephen Frears (Dangerous Liaisons), Jessica Hobbs (The Crown), Frank Rich, and Tracey Seaward.

The writers on the limited series are Seth Reiss, Sarah DeLappe, Gary Shteyngart, Jen Spyra, and Juli Weiner. The six episodes are directed by one of two directors. Stephen Frears directs episodes 1, 2, and 4, while Jessica Hobbs directs episodes 3, 5, and 6 (the series finale).

While having Academy Award®-winner Kate Winslet in the lead role is a great start, the writers, directors, and entire cast of The Regime is what makes it work in all its crazy ways!

Womentainment recommendation: Perfect release for Women’s History Month

While Kate Winslet doesn’t exactly portray a likable or “good” woman, I do think the release of The Regime at the beginning of Women’s History Month is perfect timing.

Seeing women in power is always interesting. Even if it’s a woman who abuses power in exactly the same way that her male predecessors clearly have been doing. Also, having a female Chancellor who tells men to f*ck off whenever she gets the chance is downright liberating.

Seeing Kate Winslet in The Regime reminded me of Emma Thompson in Years and Years (2019). Now, while that series was much more of a realistic drama, it did make me think that a Years and Years spin-off where the focus was on Emma Thompson’s character would be brilliant.

I’m just trying to speak this spin-off into existence by mentioning it here. Manifesting it, if you will. After all, Years and Years was also an HBO (and BBC) production. And obviously, Kate Winslet should also be in the spin-off series as the reigning queen of the HBO limited series.

The Regime premieres on HBO on March 3, 2024, at 9 PM and will be available to stream on Max.

This was also written and directed by Olivier Assayas, who is the creator (and director) of this series adaption.

If you enjoyed the previous movies by Olivier Assayas (which many lady-loving ladies will definitely be familiar with), then this is definitely for you. Also, if you like movies and series that are very meta and combines fact and fiction, then this is also for you.

Gay from the get-go!

It is a bit of a shame, that HBO is only releasing episode 1 on the premiere day. I certainly fear that this could be a mistake. Personally, I felt it took at least two episodes to really get into the vibe of this production. But if you stay patient and stick with it, then you will be rewarded.

Also, it’s gay right out of the gate, so you won’t have to wait for Alicia Vikander to lust after (in a very intense way) another woman. The other woman is played by Adria Arjona (Pacific Rim: Uprising) and their chemistry is off the charts!

Speaking of Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina, Beckett), she is awesome in this. She plays the big movie star, Mira, who has struggled with getting a hit at the box office. When the story of the series begins, she is just wrapping up a press tour for her latest movie; A superhero action flick titled Doomsday which is a huge box office hit.

In other words, she is on the top of her game because everybody wants her for their next huge hit. This means she is wanted for both the sequel and a new Marvel movie. Something her agent, Zelda (a super-cool Carrie Brownstein) is very keen on getting her attached to.

However, Mira just wants to play the role she has dreamed of for the longest time: Irma Vep.

Alicia Vikander is perfect!

It should be noted that the reason Swedish Oscar-winner (for The Danish Girl) Alicia Vikander is so amazing, is that she plays Mira as totally laidback and relatable. Everyone around her acts like a total diva and makes strange demands, but she is completely calm and kind to everyone. Having the superstar be the most normal person in the room is an excellent choice for this story.

And since Irma Vep is both drama and comedy (along with a few other genres), Alicia Vikander basically becomes the “straight man” in the comedy parts. Mind you, she is definitely not straight in Irma Vep which is public knowledge. Making the premiere of Irma Vep right as Pride month begins is perfect.

It is all very meta!

Alicia Vikander plays an actor playing the role of “Irma Vep” in a series that is a remake of a movie that is itself about making a remake of another movie. Yes, it is all very meta, but (and I realize I’m repeating myself here) by the second episode, it all feels perfectly normal and makes sense.

In this new HBO series, we’re actually witnessing the making of the “Les Vampires” series. And again, this series is based on the real 1996 movie by Olivier Assayas. In the movie, he wanted to make a movie remake and this time it’s a series.

The director does not play himself in this series, which is probably a good thing since Vincent Macaigne (Non-Fiction) is magnificent. He plays the director in the series. The character’s name is René Vidal and he is quite complicated himself. In fact, he won’t even acknowledge that he’s making a series. No, he’s a film director and simply making a very long movie that will be divided into parts.

Also, he wants to make a very direct remake of the 1915 movie, which doesn’t make much sense to the actors. They question everything and want to change and add scenes. Well, except for Mira (Alicia Vikander) who just wants to do a good job in a serious role after having starred in a blockbuster action movie. She doesn’t really make much of a fuss.

Watch Irma Vep on HBO and stream on HBO Max

The role of Irma Vep originated in the 1915 movie Les Vampires by Louis Feuillade. The fact that Irma Vep isn’t just a “damsel in distress” but rather a woman with her own ideas and plans (and sensuality) was something completely new. Hell, it can still be a rarety in many movies that revolve around a male hero (or heroes) with women only serving as pieces in his story.

Even her name is a riddle since “Irma Vep” is an anagram for “Vampire”.

This intriguing and historic backdrop alone is enough to get me interested in this HBO series. However, it’s Alicia Vikander and the very (very!) meta approach that really makes it work.

As mentioned several times already, Oliver Assayas is the writer and director of this HBO series. Just as he was on the 1996 movie which this series is essentially a longer (and different) version of. Previously, Olivier Assayas wrote and directed Clouds of Sils Maria (2014) and Personal Shopper (2016) which both starred Kristen Stewart.

She could also have been the obvious choice for the lead in this series, but I’m happy Alicia Vikander is getting to rock everyone’s world instead. Also, Kristen Stewart will be showing up in this series as well. Just not in the earlier episodes. With a total of 8 episodes, you will have to be patient.

IRMA VEP will debut MONDAY, JUNE 6 (9:00 – 10:00 p.m. ET/PT) on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max.

Womentainment recommendation: You will definitely want to watch Irma Vep for Alicia Vikander and all those gorgeous meta layers.

It’s a treat for all that love both Olivier Assayas’s previous films and for anyone who’s a fan of the Call My Agent series. Also, it’s quite steamy at times… often without anyone even touching one another. Trust me on this!

Anne Lister is Gentleman Jack

LGBTQ people have always existed. For the most part, our sexuality has merely been erased or ignored (essentially the same thing). Anne Lister has been one of the few exceptions for a long time.

Very much like the Greek poet Sappho from the island of Lesbos, Anne Lister wrote. A lot!

She has a journal which was fairly comprehensive and specific. Since she was also very honest about who she was (as much as you could be back then), she also covers the romantic and sexual aspects of her life.

As anyone concerned with actual facts will know, same-sex relationships have always existed. Anne Lister is just one very well documented example. Because she documented it herself.

But Gentleman Jack is not about the secret diaries of Anne Lister (which incidentally is also the title of a movie about Anne Lister). Instead, it’s the story of her life and Anne Lister herself is telling it.

Literally by breaking the fourth wall several times.

Sometimes to tell us something specific about her thoughts and plans. But often, it’s just to show us a reaction. Or, more specifically, a tongue-in-cheek way of showing us that she’s playing games. And winning at them!

Also, other characters do get to break the fourth wall as well. Though not as often. Three episodes into season 1 of Gentleman Jack, it has only been Anne Lister’s sister, Marian Lister (Gemma Whelan).

Suranne Jones is PERFECT as Anne Lister

Look, Anne Lister is not always fair. And she’s never easy on people that try to cross her. She’s not violent either, but she is whip-smart which is not something men were used to at that time. Many still aren’t here in 2019.

Still, when portrayed by Suranne Jones, I can’t help but be fascinated by Anne Lister. And I am always rooting for her. She knows when she’s not being entirely fair. But she also knows that she’s just doing what the successful businessmen are doing. Fortunately, she’s not shy about pointing this out, when men ask her to be nicer or “softer”.

Suranne Jones has made Anne Lister a real person that I can understand and relate to. Previous movies or TV series about Anne Lister have never managed to do this.

If you’re familiar with British TV series, then you might know Suranne Jones from her titular roles in either Scott & Bailey (2011-2016) or Doctor Foster (2015-2017). Also, she was on the British soap opera Coronation Street for over 250 episodes.

The supporting cast of Gentleman Jack

Anne’s sister Marian Lister is portrayed equally spot-on by Gemma Whelan. If you’re watching Game of Thrones, you’ll probably recognize her as the woman-loving Yara Greyjoy.

The romantic interest for Anne Lister is Ann Walker who is portrayed by Sophie Rundle (Peaky Blinders). During the first few episodes, Ann Walker seems pretty boring but all that changes rather quickly. Especially since she isn’t shy about being curious – and then simply lusting for Anne Lister. Sophie Rundle slowly but surely breathes life into this character.

In a smaller role, we also see Jodhi May as Vera Hobart. Fans of Sarah Walker stories will probably recognize her from the LGBTQ miniseries Tipping the Velvet (2002). A pretty perfect match since Gentleman Jack is very much along the lines of that miniseries. Only more light and fun. So far anyway.

Also, Gentleman Jack does feature a lot of wonderful male characters. Most of whom learn a lot from Anne Lister and end up working for or with her. Basically, this series is full of wonderful and well-known British actors!

Watch Gentleman Jack on HBO now!

Gentleman Jack is being aired on HBO now. And since it’s on HBO and not Netflix, it’s one episode per week. This is probably for the best since you’d just binge-watch the whole thing in one sitting otherwise.

Season 1 consists of 8 episodes (each around one hour long) and the final episode will air on July 7, 2019.

The series was created by Sally Wainwright with Anne Lister herself getting writing credit for all 8 episodes. After all, the series is based on the diaries she left behind. And thank the Goddess (and Anne Lister) that she did!

Sally Wainwright is an award-winning writer who also created the brilliant British series Scott & Bailey and Happy Valley along with Last Tango in Halifax. The latter also featured a love story between two women. And, incidentally, Gentleman Jack also takes place in Halifax.

Common for all these series is the fact that they all feature female lead characters. Oh yeah, Sally Wainwright knows how to write women!

Womentainment recommendation: Watch Gentleman Jack and feel both powerful, vulnerable and vindicated!

With Gentleman Jack you will get a positive and honest representation of a lesbian woman living more than a century ago. She’s fierce, brilliant and very sensual. Also, she seems to always get the girl. She just can’t always keep her when the pressure of society becomes too much. Only Anne Lister seems to have come fully to terms with who and what she is!

Watch this heartwarming, funny, erotic and loving series because there really isn’t anything else like it out there.
