The full title was originally “Scare BNB: The Double Booking”, which hints more at the scary element. With a release just in time for Halloween and “Spooky Season”, it’s worth checking out. However, I have to be honest; Watch it to support indie WLW filmmaking, not because it’s a good movie. It isn’t.

Going to a rented house in a remote setting is a classic horror setting. Having someone else show up, claiming that they also rented this property at the same time, is a real-life horror story. Not unheard of at all, but also a situation that can result in anything from mild discomfort to a scary situation.

For a lesbian couple and their son, it’s tricky to figure out just how bad this double booking really is. They’ve gone to the proverbial cabin in the woods looking for a relaxing getaway. One of the women works far too much, and the lack of wi-fi (or even a cell phone signal) is a welcome detail for this rental.

What is not welcome is the older couple, who arrive unexpectedly later that same night. They claim to have also rented it, just as they always have in that very week of every year. A new owner recently took over the property, which could explain the misunderstanding.

Could their seemingly sweet demeanor be hiding something the rainbow family should be worried about?!

The story is just too forced

On paper, the story about a lesbian couple and their son on a “relaxing getaway that turns into a nightmare” sounds intriguing enough. However, the actual story is very forced, and every single character will end up doing something strange or quite unrealistic, just to keep things interesting.

In other words, the plot of Double Booking is not good. In fact, it’s pretty bad.

What I am happy to report does work and is a good element of this Tello thriller is the lesbian couple. With Emmy (Mandahla Rose) and Dylan (Lily Richards), we get a very loving lesbian couple who are clearly very different, but seem to respect and honor each other.

I mean, they’ve been together long enough to have a 6-year-old son, but have yet to figure out how to compromise on the ideal vacation for all of them. Maybe that’s just me, but having a kid would certainly have resulted in them learning to compromise better by now.

Admittedly, their son Micah is very charming as portrayed by Deacon Clark Tuss. The young actor does have a few weaker moments, but his charm makes up for it, and he works brilliantly with his “movie moms”.

The older couple who interrupt their family time consists of Martin (Marvin E. West) and Mavis (Deborah Seidel), who also work fairly well. Especially her, I’d say, but she also has a lot of the scenes that are meant to help us relate to this older couple. He is more of a classic “grumpy old man”.

Basically, the actors do well or at least okay, while the story does not do them any favors.

Watch Double Booking from Tello now

Double Booking comes from director Christin Baker, who also gave us the LGBTQ Christmas anthology Season of Love (2019) and the lesbian Christmas movie Christmas at the Ranch (2021). With Scare BNB: The Double Booking, as it was previously titled, Christin Baker has moved from Christmas to Halloween, which I like.

In case you didn’t know, I usually write reviews of genre productions (horror, thriller, sci-fi, and true crime) over at Heaven of Horror. Admittedly, the horror and thriller elements of Double Booking worked just fine. It’s the story and pacing that I did not care for.

Be sure to check out our list of the best female queer horror characters here >

The movie has won “Best Thriller” at the LA Independent Women Film Awards and “Best LGBTQ Film” at the Toronto International Women Film Festival, which is great for this movie. I don’t know about the competition, but it certainly tells you that other people have enjoyed it more than me.

Double Booking is out on VOD from Tello now.

Also, it’s the Opening Night Feature at the Tennessee International Indie Film Festival (TIIFF) in Franklin, TN (outside of Nashville) on November 6, 2025.

Womentainment recommendation: Support LGBTQ+ indie filmmaking

Overall, I want to celebrate and endorse indie queer productions, so if watching a well-portrayed and living lesbian couple at the center of a movie is enough for you, then please do check this out.

However, if you decide to watch this for the great storyline, I suspect you will be sorely disappointed. I know I was.

A HOLIDAY I DO is a new Tello movie. More specifically, it’s a new lesbian Christmas movie. The story is cute and it really does mange to cover most Christmas movie tropes, which I am fine with. It’s all part of this particular subgenre. However, the romance story being like something from the past century is less cute.

Overall, I wasn’t crazy about this movie. I give it a 2 out of 5 for the cute story and chemistry between the love interests. Also, I adore Jill Larson of the brilliant 2014 horror movie The Taking of Deborah Logan, and she plays the mother of the lead lesbian character. How awesome is that phrasing: Lead lesbian character. Fun fact: her daughter in the 2014 horror movie is also gay.

Anyway, when it comes to new Holiday movies with LGBTQ characters, you should check out the movie It’s A Wonderful Knife instead. It’s a horror movie, but one that’s gay in all the right ways. Truly made for us! Don’t take my word for it. Check out the amazing It’s A Wonderful Knife screenwriter, Michael Kennedy. He’s having a blast at X/Twitter taking on anyone coming after the movie for being gay.

Classic Christmas movie setup

In A Holiday I Do, we meet Jane who is a single mom. She’s a sweetheart, but also a mess, and focuses on raising her 10-year-old daughter, Lexi, while managing her family’s horse farm after the loss of her father. Jane lives with her mom, who offers lots of moral support and wants her daughter to find a girlfriend.

Jane’s ex-husband (the father of Lexi) is getting married again. A Christmas Wedding, of course.

Now, Jane is best friends with her ex, Mark, so it’s not surprising that she is his best (wo)man. His fiancé isn’t thrilled about this and is portrayed as quite the bridezilla. However, she’s sweet with her soon-to-be stepdaughter, so we know she isn’t all bad.

Of course, nothing goes as planned, and Jane has no idea her mom is about to lose the family farm because her mom is trying to protect her daughter. However, one good thing does come from this Christmas wedding; The wedding planner Sue. As soon as Jane and Sue have their meet-cute, sparks fly between them. Clearly of a romantic kind.

But can anything ever come of this chance encounter? Well, this is a Christmas movie, so the answer is a given. Or is it?!

Do the women kiss in A Holiday I Do on Tello? *minor spoiler*

This is definitely a spoiler, so let me just do a SPOILER ALERT shoutout here. I don’t like doing spoilers but I feel I need to make an exception for this one.

Yes, the two women in A Holiday I Do eventually kiss. This happens for a chaste second in the final scene of the movie and the camera immediately panes away. I almost laughed out loud (okay, more of a chuckle really) when this happened. It was like an immediate flashback to many of the lesbian romance movies of the 1990s.

Not the best ones, of course, but those that made the rounds at LGBT film festivals in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The ones where women look longingly in each other’s direction and it’s all subtext.

I admit I expected a lot more from a Tello Films release. I mean, this is the streaming platform that has the following description on their own Instagram account:

“A streaming platform that makes brave and original series and features with lesbians / queer women at the center of every story”

Sure, you could watch this Christmas movie because the lesbian love story is sweet, and the chemistry between Jane (Lindsay Hicks) and Sue (Rivkah Reyes) comes across clearly. This just makes it even sadder that we never get to see it more. And I’m not talking hot and steamy scenes. Though I wouldn’t object, it’s not traditionally part of Christmas romances.

However, more than the singular chaste kiss in the dying moments of this movie is the least we could expect.

The directors of A Holiday I Do are Paul Schneider and Alicia Schnieder. This is the second feature film for Paul Schneider as a director following the 2021 movie Just Another Dream which has a 3.7 IMDb rating as of writing this review. This is the first director credit for Alicia Schneider and also the first writing credit for them both.

All the actors in this movie deliver strong performances. Even those who have to be Christmas movie stereotypes. And, as mentioned, Lindsay Hicks and Rivkah Reyes (Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls) have amazing chemistry as Jane and Sue. So much good happened in the casting part of this lesbian Christmas movie.

If only the story could’ve reached the heights of the chemistry between the key characters, we could’ve had a new Christmas movie classic for LGBTQ+ viewers. But it doesn’t and so we don’t.

Womentainment recommendation: Watch it for the cute story and positive representation

Having said that, you could watch A Holiday I Do for the cute story and positive representation, but I also have to (again!) focus on the fact that it could’ve been a lot better. Especially in terms of bringing the lesbian romance to fruition. So to speak.

I would rather watch A New York Christmas Wedding or Happiest Season again. In fact, I definitely will during the holiday season.

However, I don’t expect I’ll ever feel the need to watch A Holiday I Do again.

A Holiday I Do is out on Tello from November 10, 2023.

SO MY GRANDMA’S A LESBIAN! is a new Spanish LGBTQ movie on Netflix. The title has been turned into a more catchy one instead of the original Salir del ropero. As the title indicates, we’re dealing with a comedy that centers on an LGBTQ plot. Or rather, it should have focused on this, but the many side plots continuously take away from this story.

A huge plus for this movie is the cast. It is chock full of brilliant Spanish actors. Many of whom you should recognize from both Spanish movies and other productions.

“Coming out of the wardrobe!”

On the surface, So My Grandma’s a Lesbian! is a movie about two older women who finally decide to live their truth and get married. They’re very concerned about how their family will take this news. And also, how the people in their fairly small village on one of the Spanish Canary Islands (off the West Coast of the African continent) will react.

One of these wonderful women insists on calling it “Coming out of the wardrobe” instead of “Coming out of the closet”. She thinks “closet” sounds more like a male gay thing while wardrobe is more feminine and just suits her better. This is a cute little detail that describes her perfectly. She’s done with everyone else deciding how to feel and act, so she’s choosing her own way of life.

And, obviously, this is also the reasoning behind the original Spanish title Salir de ropero which translates into “come out of the wardrobe”. Or simply closet, since it’s the same thing and just a small pun.

So My Grandma’s a Lesbian! would have been a much better movie in every way, if the story had actually centered on these two women wanting to get married. Instead, a myriad of side plots takes up way too much space in this movie. Despite a runtime of just over an hour and a half, it feels much longer.

Such a gorgeous cast

The cast of So My Grandma’s a Lesbian! is definitely enough reason to check it out. As the older lesbian couple, Celia and Sofía, we have two amazing Spanish veteran actors; Rosa Maria Sardà and Verónica Forqué.

Rosa Maria Sardà plays the role of the brazen Celia, who wears a red leather jacket and drives a motorcycle. She’s both full of love and way too reckless which falls back on the more calm and careful Sofía, who is portrayed by Verónica Forqué.

If you’re familiar with Spanish movies – such as those made by the always amazing Pedro Almodóvar – then you’ll probably find both familiar. Rosa Maria Sardà was in the Academy Award-winning All About My Mother (org. title Todo sober mi madre) from 1999 and Verónica Forqué played the title role in Kika from 1993. And yes, both movies were written and directed by Almodóvar.

Unfortunately, Rosa Maria Sardà (Celia in the movie) passed away in June of 2020, which makes this her final film. What is fortunate, is that this movie originally premiered back in October of 2019 and came out in Spain in December of 2019, so she was still here for the release.

In other key roles, we see Ingrid García Jonsson as the granddaughter, Eva, while David Verdaguer plays the role of Jorge, who is also related to one of these older women. If you’ve watched the LGBTQ movie Anchor and Hope, then you’ll recognize David Verdaguer from a key role in that movie.

You might like: Our review of Anchor and Hope here >

Every single actor actually worked really well for me. The story just became a mess in the final half, which was a shame. However, I feel quite sure that they all had a blast making this.

Watch So My Grandma’s a Lesbian on Netflix now!

Ángeles Reiné is the writer and director of So My Grandma’s a Lesbian! (org. title Salir del ropero). This is the feature film debut of Ángeles Reiné as both writer and director, so hopefully, he’ll continue working with the awesome moments from this movie and leave the rest in editing.

While I genuinely appreciate what he’s trying to do in terms of showing same-sex love between older people and the challenges (as well as the love and acceptance), he does ultimately fail. The story ends up being about too many other (straight) side plots that, frankly, bore me.

Since the loving gay couple only takes up a maximum of 30 percent of the runtime, it would have made for a solid short film instead of a messy feature film. The French movie Two of Us (org. title Deux) is coming out in the US in a few weeks. It also has a story about an older lesbian couple trying to come out and be together officially.

However, unlike this new movie on Netflix, Two of Us really does focus entirely on the story of these two older women in love. Also, it’s the French submission for Academy Award in “Best foreign film” so you’ll be hearing more about it.

Still, the scenes in So My Grandma’s a Lesbian! that do focus on these two wonderful women – and their crazy family – does make it worth watching. So while I can’t claim that I loved this movie as a whole, it had some funny and heartwarming moments along the way that make it worth your attention.

Fugitiva is a new Spanish series on Netflix. It’s listed as a drama series and isn’t a Netflix produced show. Unfortunately, this also shows.

Whereas shows like the Mexican Ingobernable (starring Kate del Castillo) or the very first Spanish production Cable Girls [org. title Las chicas del cable] offer tongue-in-cheek soap craziness and true drama, Fugitiva is something else.

It feels much more like a TV movie dragged out for a 9-episode TV show. That’s not to say the actors are bad (they’re absolutely not), but rather that the story is nothing more than mediocre. For me, it was even less than that.

The soap opera plot of Fugitiva

There’s definitely an audience that will love Fugitiva. It’s just not the audience who’s become accustomed to the high quality shows from Netflix. Everything from the aforementioned Spanish-language shows to Orange is the New Black and more recently the brilliant The Haunting of Hill House.

Of course, there is also a huge difference in how you watch shows on Netflix versus “flow” television.

Netflix shows are notoriously binge-watched by the season whereas Fugitiva was originally shown one episode per week. This means a show like Fugitiva has to captivate the audience from the first episode. Otherwise, they won’t be back next week for the next episode.

Still, the fact that you’ll be able to guess huge chunks of the plot from watching just the first episode, is never a good thing. So many clues are dropped that you’ll know both what they want you to think and what’s actually going on.

That’s not the style of shows that have been created directly by Netflix to be released on their platform one season at a time. Then again, many other series on “real” TV (or flow television) manage to keep you guessing.

Even though Fugitiva is very much a drama, it does also use thriller and crime as plot drivers. Just not very well.

Fugitiva is all about Paz Vega

The absolute star of Fugitiva is the character of Magda. She’s the woman who arranges the kidnapping of both herself and her three kids to escape her abusive husband. In other words, this show is about a woman who takes control of her own life.

Then again, it’s also about how men continue to abuse her in other ways. And – of course – to show a few villainous women. All very interesting characters that are portrayed brilliantly.

Magda is portrayed by Paz Vega, who does a good job. She’s just so much better than what she can show with this character. One second she’s tough and smart. The next, she’s naive and powerless. It gets real frustrating, real fast.

Paz Vega made a huge breakthrough in 2001 with the title role in Sex and Lucía. Also, she played the key character in Spanglish from 2004. Next, she’ll be starring in both Emperor and Rambo 5. How’s that for diversity?!

Very memorable supporting roles

Another key role is played by the mesmerizing Charo López. The Spanish veteran actress is worth watching this show for. I would have loved even more scenes with her. A complete scene stealer every single time!

Also, Melina Matthews has one of the more interesting female supporting characters. She’s definitely a name you’ll be getting familiar with in the future – including English speaking roles.

Melina Matthews already played the title role in Andy Muschetti’s (director of the new It) horror movie Mama from 2013. A very small role given the nature of her character in it, but still.

As of this moment, there is no word on whether there will be a season 2 of Fugitiva. But if Fugitiva does get another season, I’m hoping Netflix will go into the production of this.

Hopefully, this could ensure that the season would be a more intense experience. Even for those binge-watching it.

Joaquín Oristrell is the creator of this series and I don’t really know much about him. He’s an award-winning screenwriter and director from both TV and film. I highly doubt Fugitiva will win any awards. Except maybe for the supporting actresses, but even that would be a huge stretch.

Womentainment recommendation: Watch Fugitiva on Netflix if you enjoy most Lifetime movies

I was hoping Fugitiva would be my new Netflix obsession, but unfortunately, it didn’t live up to my expectations. I usually enjoy watching movies in Spanish and adore Spanish horror and thriller movies. In fact, I write reviews for these over at Heaven of Horror.

Fugitiva is out on Netflix in most of the world now!
